Spawn rate?

hey everyone i was wondering if there was a way to change the spawnrate on mc sp as i try to make mob traps but the spawnrate kills it and it produces like 1 item an hour lol
I watch coes quest and have his world downloaded yet my spawnrate isnt the same as his, so how do i make it the same?
